In 1999 (Tihange 1) and 2004 (Tihange 3), EUFOR INTER was selected by ELECTRABEL (ENGIE) as the contractor for the manufacturing, testing/quality analysis, delivery and commissioning of all PLEUGER motor pump units (Flowserve//Pleuger Worthington) according to the specifications and technical requirement of the engineering and design office - TRACTEBEL (ENGIE) - “Specification for the CEU replacement well pumps”.

The CEU role involves supplying extreme emergency cooling water - CUS - for water storage tanks, diesel generator heat exchangers and air conditioners installed in diesel generator rooms.

This refers to motor pump units (MPUs) installed outside of the nuclear zone in wells in the immediate proximity of nuclear zones intended to supply the site with cooling water in the event of a disaster, at 250 m3/h @ 80 mCE per MPU.

The prevention plan requires the MPUs to be regularly tested to ensure that they can immediately react if necessary.

The execution of the contract was based on the category CGI - 10CFR part 21 - “process dedication” according to Specification CNT1/4NT/5633 rev. 1 + DTRDC1/4NT59742 rev. 0 (safety functions).

The safety classification was class 3 according to ANSI 51.1.

“The pumps must be able to operate during and after a seismic event (Safe Shutdown Earthquake) and external accident event (indirect consequences of an aircraft impact).”

The MPUs were designed with a service life of 30 years.

The construction folder that we delivered to TRACTEBEL details all of the technical characteristics of the supplied equipment, as well as all of the tests performed at the Pleuger – Flowserve Hamburg GmbH – Quality Management facilities, including design, manufacture, testing, operating and maintenance documents.

The technical details are confidential and remain the property of the customer.
